Tesla Shows the Importance of Ergonomics

A recent article by The Guardian takes an inside look to Tesla’s warehouse safety operations. In recent years, Tesla has had to make big improvements to their safety training. In the earlier stages, Tesla was having an injury rate that exceeded industry norms. Workers believed this was so high due to difficult deadlines they were expected to meet. Tesla’s CEO acknowledged that his workers had been working long hours on jobs that were not easy. A report, which was obtained by the Guardian, states that ambulances had been called more than 100 times since 2014. Most cases in which an ambulance was called was due to dizziness, seizures, abnormal breathing, and fainting. Workers have attested to seeing co-workers pass out while working. Tesla’s CEO did make an effort to fix the injury rate by bringing Ergonomic experts.  The article by the Guardian can be read here.

Safety training can easily be over looked by companies, and Tesla is an example. Companies can cut areas of the safety budget that they feel they do not need. By cutting parts of safety training out of the budget, money may be saved but at the expense of the workers. Tesla made the correct move by adding in ergonomics experts. Ergonomics is the study of people’s efficiency in their working environments. Ergonomics training is perfectly suited for factory workers. In a factory, workers maybe putting their body in positions it is not used to. Doing this same motion for eight hours a day and five days a week will be damaging to the body overtime.

Beat The Summer Heat

Beat The Summer Heat

With the summer months approaching quickly, it is important to have a safety emergency plan. Emergency Planning assists facilities in complying with these regulations and helps them prepare for potential emergency situations. Existing OSHA, SARA Title III, and numerous state regulations call for all facilities to meet a number of emergency preparedness/crisis management requirements. These include that every facility have an Emergency Plan that spells out what is to be done in case of an emergency; and that this plan, as well as other important information, be shared with the local emergency planning committee and emergency response groups such as the police, fire department and others. Areas that need to be covered include types of emergencies, the emergency plan, the crisis management team, evacuation procedures, communications, the role of outside agencies, practice sessions and drills, and more. Using a powerful combination of audio, full-motion video, text and colorful graphics, this course provides the most cost-effective safety and regulatory compliance training available today. The course is divided into a number of logical sections so information is easily understood… and retained. MARCOM’s online courses come with a comprehensive and easy-to-use learning management system (LMS). With this system you can establish your own training environment by setting registration requirements and defining log-ins, create curricula for various positions and departments, set up tests… and more. The system also tracks all employee activity and performance, including, which courses employees have taken, when the courses were taken, test scores, and other important data. This information can be accessed online as well as printed in hard copy form.
